Smooth Sailing


Being a recent convert to smoothies, I will preface this discussion by saying I haven’t tried too many different types of smoothies (although one that featured an orange and some iceberg lettuce was not really one of my favourites).  However I have come up with one that I can’t seem to get enough of this summer.

First off, few things bring more joy to a frugal heart in the summer than the words “seasonal fruit”.  Suddenly large quantities of delicious fruit and vegetables are available at great prices.  Case in point – avocados.  Right now I can get them 60% cheaper than any other time of the year.

So I have been having quacamole a lot…mmm mmm good!  And I have also come up with a delicious  smoothie.  As a bonus this recipe also uses up some of the overripe bananas you have sitting in the freezer.  You know the ones you put in there to make banana bread or banana muffins.  Well now you have another great way to use those bananas in an:

Avocado Chocolate Banana Smoothie

1 ripe avocado

1 frozen banana

1 cup chocolate almond milk (or chocolate soy milk or just plain chocolate milk)

1 Tbsp cocoa (optional – if you want it to be really chocolatey)

Dice the avocado and add to a blender.  Take the frozen banana out of the freezer and pop it in the microwave (peel and all) for one minute.  Just that little bit of heating will make the peel come off really easily while keeping the banana itself still mostly frozen.  Add banana and milk (and cocoa) to blender.  Blend on high.

You will end up with a smoothie that closely resembles a chocolate milkshake in taste and texture.  Enjoy!
